But I have a High School

College Counselor

Can't I just use them?

Absolutely!

High school college counselors play a crucial role in supporting students through the application process.

However, it's important to keep in mind that their time and resources may be limited due to the number of students they serve, and therefore they cannot provide the level of individualized attention that an IEC can offer. An IEC can offer personalized attention and expertise, complementing the services provided by your high school college counselor.

(According to the U.S. Dept. of Education, U.S.public high school students receive an average of 38 minutes of personal advising on College Admission over 4 years, while IECA members provide an average of 18 hours)

High school college counselors can help students understand the importance of their high school transcripts and guide them in selecting appropriate courses to meet college admission requirements. They can also work with teachers and other staff members to coordinate recommendation letters that highlight students' strengths and achievements. In addition, they are the ones who upload transcripts and recommendations, when needed, for the student's applications.

The relationship between an IEC and School Counselor is very important, as they both can play a significant role in helping to reduce student stress during the application process.

According to IECA, the average college visits by an IEC is 24 per year. This helps expand a student's college list and increases the likelihood of finding the best-fit institutions.
